The abandoned shopping cart. This famous symbol of urban blight has taken on a very different meaning for digital marketers. So what can we learn from this icon of e-commerce gone awry? The folks at Permuto Discoveries have put together an enlightening chart that spotlights the realities of the abandoned shopping cart, including:

  • 70% of U.S. online shoppers abandoned their shopping carts at least once before completing the checkout process.
  • The average value per abandoned shopping cart was $109
  • High shipping charges (46%), a desire to comparison shop (37%) and a lack of money (36%) were the most cited reasons by consumers for abandoning shopping carts.
